Tension in Forole, Marsabit County remains high following the deadly Monday attack that claimed the lives of 11 elderly residents and are now calling on the government to boost security in the area.
The eleven were lured to attend a peace meeting only to be surrounded by their assailants and sprayed with bullets killing 11 and leaving three others nursing serious injuries.
According to sources, the attackers are believed members of a militia group based in Ethiopia.
Confirming the incident, Maikona Location chief Bonaya Racha said the attack came in the wake of a watering point dispute between residents of and a neighboring Ethiopian village.
“The residents were hoodwinked into attending a peace meeting over a disputed pool of water only to have heavy gunfire opened on them.” Mr. Racha said.
Residents have now threatened to migrate from the village if their security situation is not addressed urgently for safer places.
On Wednesday, a section of elders from the Gabra community called on the National Government to open an inquest to establish whether the Forolle attack was planned by some politicians from the county.
They added that the government should return guns confiscated from police reservists in Forole and Turbi areas to beef up security and protect locals.
Leaders from Marsabit led by Maikona MCA Buke Diba have condemned the Monday incident terming it a security lapse and called for the deployment of more security operatives to the area.
