Unity between the Meru county governor, Bishop Kawira Mwangaza, and members of the County Assembly led by speaker Ayub Bundi has not only brought hope to the people of Meru and Kenya at large but also set the best environment to roll the ball of service delivery within the county government of Meru.
From the incidences that were witnessed by the residents of the county and all the people in the world, the nasty relationship between the county assembly and the executive was pegged on unsubstantiated accusations that both sides pelted on each other.
It was a supremacy battle that lacked substance and embarrassed the two arms of the government. The residents of Meru who elected the new leaders did not expect such a start. They were electing a government that would outdo the previous two regimes, the one that was led by Governors Peter Munya and Kiraitu Murungi.
With a good working relationship, Governor Mwangaza will now be able to form her government and execute her mandate well. She will be able to enhance official communication between the executive and the County Assembly for good governance and service to the people.
Some people thrive during times of conflict. We witnessed power brokers who worked day and night in efforts to unite the two arms with either a motive to address their personal interests or genuinely save the people of Meru County.
It was also a golden time for political strategists to access governor Mwangaza and speaker Ayub Bundi with promises of solving the problem and taking care of the interests that both sides were looking for in the transformative government.
Reports that a section of Members of Parliament are not happy with the unity are not only shocking but a revelation of the backwardness of some of the leaders in power today.
What reason can one give to oppose an initiative for bringing leaders together to serve the people in unity?
It is in bad faith that the members of the National Assembly want to be directly get involved in county affairs; this was not witnessed in the previous two regimes. Is it that they are feeling that Kawira’s government is weak and require their support?
Let them know that Kenyans know what the roles of our leaders are, and let them concentrate on their mandate of legislation, representation, and oversight at the national level. At the county level, the executive and the county assembly will be able to deliver.
To the residents of the county and Kenyans at large, do not let our elected, appointed, or nominated leaders take advantage of a section of residents who are not familiar with the law that governs this country, let them not get misused by the leaders to project the voices that are aimed at ensuring selfish interest.
All the stakeholders need to come together and support the existing governance structures for the prosperity of the counties and Kenya as a country.
