Lewa Marathon winners dedicate win to their families

Philip Kigen, 37, and a father of two, owed his win to his family and his wife, especially who pushed him in preparing for the race. Kigen came first in the race after clocking 2:19:06 in the 42km race.

Kigen said he vowed to himself to win the race in 2023 after coming second to Peter Wahome. John Mitei and Isaack Koech came in second and third, clocking 2:21:23 and 2:22:37, respectively.

Mercy Kwambai, who won on the women’s side, also dedicated her win to her family. She is a mother of two also. Coming second and third to her were Zeddy Jerop (2:52:54) and Fridah Leropa (3:04:32), respectively.

The 24th edition of the marathon attracted around 1200 runners both locally and from across the world. Both Kigen and Kwambai said that the race was tough, especially because of the hilly areas.

Kigen also said that this was the best time he had since his first marathon in 2015 in Marrakech Marathon in Morocco and that h was also looking forward to competing in Italy.

To Kwambai, this was her first full marathon in Kenya after her first appearance in Nigeria 2 years ago. She revealed that she was training for another race in Germany.
