Residents of Jerime, Saku sub-county, Marsabit County are up in arms over a court ruling that favored an individual against the community.
The ruling by the magistrate court declared that the land where Saku Technical Training Institute is built in Jerime area belongs to an individual and not the community.
The residents have now demanded that the national government move with speed to intervene before the land and by extension the TTI is taken away.
The locals have also filed an appeal at the Isiolo High Court seeking to bring back the land to the community.
Mekelina Lepalo, who is the leader of Milima Mitatu Jerime pleaded with President William Ruto to intervene and ensure the community reclaims the land.
He said the land was set aside for development projects and if it is transferred to private ownership area residents will suffer.
He castigated the ruling saying it was detrimental to the development of the community.
Abdulai Dabaso, an area elder said the initial plan for the land was to build a hospital, a primary and Secondary school, and a police station among other government facilities.
“We have lived here knowing this is a government land. Elders settled on it because there was no other strategic place they could have built institutions. We demand to be given the land back. We won’t relent in fighting to reclaim it,” he said.
Adhi Galicha said three people had been killed during a tussle over the same land in the recent past.
