Isiolo, Samburu leaders caution against sand harvesting in Ewaso Nyiro River

Leaders from Isiolo and Samburu have called for the conservation of Ewaso Nyiro River that serves residents of Samburu, Isiolo and Laikipia Counties.

Speaking during the annual camel caravan that seeks to promote peace amongst communities living in Laikipia, Isiolo and Samburu, the leaders led by Isiolo Deputy Governor Abdi Issa and his Samburu counterpart Julius Leseto blamed sand harvesting along the river for the increased school dropout incidents in the area.

“Sand helps in retaining water and when harvested the water flows at a high speed, hence denying the people of Samburu and Isiolo good access to the vital resource.” Said Issa Abdi.

Leseto cautioned residents against charcoal burning without acquiring the necessary permits required.

“Cutting of trees for charcoal burning is a sure way of turning our counties into deserts. Trees are a resource that is owned by the government and no one is allowed to cut them without a permit from the area chief,” said the Samburu County Deputy Governor.

Waso Ward Member of County Assembly Paul Ekitang noted that the sand harvested from the river is sold cheaply thus denying the county government revenue. The MCA also put the Kenya Wildlife Services (KWS) on notice over increased poaching activities in the area.
