Officers at Nasuulu Conservancy have urged the government to arm all the rangers so that they aid in ending cattle rustling in their community.

The chairperson Ms. Sadia Mohammed, speaking at an inter-tribal peace meeting held at Nasuulu Conservancy headquarters in Loruko location Thursday, said that the attacks could be reduced if the hired rangers are provided with adequate firearms.

She also said that the conservancy has only four guns which are shared in turns by all the rangers which makes it hard for the rangers to help the residents as the thieves are armed well.

Sadia also added that the organization had helped in improving the livelihood of the residents by promoting community art crafts activities like beading through the support of Northern Rangeland Trust (NRT).

The Chief Program Officer Mr. Issa Gedi who was also present said that over the past three years, 112,329 livestock had been stolen and only 52,169 had been recovered with an estimated 207 people having been injured.

The injured were the breadwinners in their families and were now disabled and depended on government relief food.

Gedi also added that NRT was engaged in a plan to transform morans from cattle rustling and help them engage in more productive and legal occupations.

He said that they would work closely with morans, chiefs, women groups, and also security committees to end the cattle rustling.

During the meeting, certain guidelines were put in place to make sure that the rustling was stopped.

The elders were asked to hold meetings to come up with grazing rules to avoid conflicts over grazing and watering points.

The Eastern Regional Commissioner Mr. Paul Rotich however urged the residents to surrender their firearms to the government and let them take care of security.

Rotich also said that the people should focus on the construction of more schools in the region.
