Meru County and larger Mount Kenya residents showcased their great interest in embracing climate-smart agricultural practices during the Meru ASK show.
The theme was Promoting climate-smart agriculture and Trade initiatives for sustainable economic growth.
Among the exhibitors were SACCOs that support farmers in the county by giving loans and helping them save their earnings, environmental conservation enthusiasts including Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (Rerec), the private sector, and some parastatals too.
Learning institutions in the region also showcased their specific works. The Meru University of Science and Technology had an interesting exhibition on Miraa.
Miraa is known as one of the most common perishable cash crops in Meru County. The university, therefore, came up with a way to increase the shelf life of the product by making a miraa infusion bag.
The bag is made like a tea bag only instead of tea it is miraa. The bag is available in sweetened and unsweetened variables as preferred by the consumer.
The university said that they were still waiting for approval from the Kenya Bureau of Statistics for the bag to make it to the market. Their aim is to add value to the Miraa product for easy consumption.
The Agriculture CS Mithika Linturi lauded their work and also said that he would make sure that the university partnered with the already established Laare Institute to enhance the research on miraa.
The CS also said that he was working with the county government to support the farmers including getting new markets for the produce.
