The County Government of Meru has narrowed down on cash payments to increase revenue and seal corruption loopholes.
Meru County Finance Executive Committee Member (CECM) Monica Kathono told Journalists at her office, the county has advanced in revenue collection technology by introducing an App that will help residents to pay for services from the comfort of their phones.
The App will bear the trader’s license number or ID and will automatically display payment details like if the business license is paid for or not.
The Kawira Mwangaza administration aspires to double revenue collection by allowing Revenue officers further skills and incentives for effective service delivery.
The automation means traders will pay directly to County government accounts through the app thus cutting down on misappropriation and corruption of monies collected.
“Our plan is to go cashless in every sector. We have already proved it is possible through our Level Three, IV, and V hospitals. We are heading to Level Two and dispensaries. This is not empty talk government. Our governor is committed to implementing whatever pledge is made.
“Once you pay, the money is directly sent to county accounts. We have realized a lot of developments since then. In fact, revenue collection has increased more than double in our hospitals. We are now moving to other streams of revenue,” she said.
Kathono said the technology is more transparent and encourages accountability because a Finance executive or the Governor will know the amount collected through the phone.
“The new system is very efficient. We had challenges in revenue collection gadgets We had a deficit of 220 gadgets which we bought last December for all our 300 officers,” Kathono said.
During the end of Governor Kiraitu Murungi’s tenure, the County collected Sh435 million in revenues compared to the previous year when it collected Sh389 million.
The regime attributed the achievement to the modernization of towns, expansion of infrastructure, creation of dust-free towns and markets, and town management boards among other measures.
