The undisputed kings of hockey in Eastern Region- Meru School

The Story Meru School is a national school located in Meru County, Eastern region. The school is under the leadership of Mr. Henry Mwenda Rutere.

The school is a powerhouse in the Eastern region and beyond in hockey. The hockey icon has participated in the Eastern Region hockey championship in 2016, 2017, 2019, and 2023. The hockey stalwarts have competed in the National Championship in 2016, 2017, 2019and 2023.

In 2019 the team performed remarkably in the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) National Hockey championship by finishing in an unprecedented position 3. This gave the team a ticket to participate in the Federation of East Africa Secondary School Sports Association (FEASSSA) championship in Arusha Tanzania. The school did not disappoint and finished in position 5 overall.

In 2023 Meru School was the undisputed champion of the Eastern region and 4th Nationally in Eldoret. On the reasons for the great performance of the team Enock Wangila, the HoD Games, and also a coach in the team says “Success has come as a result of hard work and enthusiasm.

Playing competitive build-up matches against more established hockey teams like Meru University, KeMU, and Meru Veterans has strengthened the team. The team also participated in tournaments in Eastern, Central, and Nairobi regions for exposure.

The slogan of the team is “In God, we trust” The team psyches themselves by saying “Hakuna rahisi”. Meaning they have to work hard and win easily.

Coach Edwin Eshapaya adds that “Team discipline on and off the field and commitment in training and during matches has led to great success.”
