Tharaka Nithi senator who is also the Senate Deputy Speaker Prof Kithure Kindiki is crying foul for what he is calling; reduction of senate to a house of little debates and small activities that have little or no impact on Kenyans.
Addressing Senators during the last session of the senate before the senators adjourned for Christmas, Prof Kindiki faulted several Senate committees not doing the rightful role of checking what is happening at the Counties and delivering credible reports that can be used in the governance of the Counties and management of public resources.
‘We are failing Kenyans by letting the Governors run the Counties as they wish. Some of them do not even respect this house when summoned to answer to audit queries. They feel they own the counties an attitude that is regrettable. We have been reduced to doing the work of the County Assemblies despite us being the upper house’ Kindiki said.
The Senate Deputy Speaker recommended for a total change of house business and advised members to lead their rightful roles of doing checks and balances on the counties when Senate resumes.
He regretted that, cases of corruption are reported by the media everyday a situation that has clearly shown failure in the oversight role of the Senate.
‘The constitution is very clear on the role of Senators in the governance of the counties, I urge you Senators to be more proactive and save our people from Governors who are using their positions to enrich themselves through corrupt ways and oppress poor Kenyans who expect good service delivery from the government’ Kindiki added.
Many governors across the county are being accused of mismanaging the counties and forgetting their mandate.
They are involved in rampant corruption, tribalism, nepotism among other vices a situation that has negatively affected development in the country.
