The County Government of Meru, through the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports, will work closely with MPs and MCAs to facilitate training and acquisition of mandatory documents for Bodaboda riders in the County.
The documents which includes driving license and insurance, are meant to promote road safety and traffic discipline among the riders, as well as ensure conformity to traffic rules being enforced by the National Government, popularly referred to as the Michuki rules.
The individual riders, however, must be organized and registered in recognized groups operating in particular areas.
Speaking in Githongo, Youth Affairs and Sports CEC Daniel Kiogora said the measures will help in regulating the sector and getting rid of a few individuals using the sector to engage in crime.
He pledged continued support for the bodaboda riders, adding that the County Government recognizes the sector as a major employer for many youth in the County.
Kibaranyaki Bodaboda Operators group Secretary Mark Mugambi lauded efforts by the county administration in streamlining the sector adding that bodaboda operators in the area were already organizing themselves into registered groups aimed at empowering members through the acquisition of government services such as loans, discounted rates for driving courses and individual contributions for savings.
He said that the contributions are deposited weekly in a group savings account, which they aim to use in financing assets to benefit the members through dividends.
