Residents of Tharaka Nithi have a reason to smile following the commissioning of the Kaanwa water treatment plant by Water Cabinet Secretary Simon Chelugui.
The Sh. 10Million facility which is expected to serve over 3,000 residents of Kaanwa and its environs has the capacity of supplying clean and safe water at a rate 10,000 litres per hour.
Speaking during the commissioning, Tharaka Nithi Governor Muthomi Njuki said his administration was committed to ensuring that residents of Tharaka Nithi get access to clean and safe drinking water as envisaged by the Tharaka Nithi Intergrated Water System.
“When Cholera outbreak ravaged the nation, Tharaka Nithi was not spared by the epidemic and the County Government and Red Cross swung into action to contain the situation and thus by providing clean water to residents we are able to mitigate future occurrences. The projects is a big step toward attaining the envisaged Tharaka Nithi Integrated Water System.” Governor Njuki said.
Kenya Red Cross Society Secretary General Abbas Gullet urged residents to take advantage of the water project to access safe water as it will help them avoid common water borne diseases.
Water CS Simon Chelugui on his part reiterated the government’s commitment in ensuring Kenyans get access to clean and safe water for use adding that Sh. 1.6 billion has been set aside for clean water and sewerage systems in Chuka and Chogoria.
The Sh. 10 Million project was jointly funded by the National Government, the County Government of Tharaka Nithi and the Kenya Red Cross Society.
