Meru county women representative Kawira Mwangaza has accessed two top Meru leaders for what she is calling the failure to save the community at this time of coronavirus pandemic that has affected the livelihoods of many Meru county residents.
In a message delivered online and through Baite TV Kawira observed that the miraa crop that supports thousands of people from Meru north and other parts of the country is facing an enormous threat as a result of several county governments banning the trade of the commodity in their respective counties.
Kawira accused Governor Kiraitu of not doing enough to talk to his fellow governors who have blocked the sale of the commodity in their counties
‘My free advice to Kiraitu; as our county president, please initiate dialogue with your collogue governors and remind that Meru county residents are consuming agricultural products from their counties. Tell them to lift the ban on Miraa to save our people’ Kawira said
The county women representative challenged the governor to organized a meeting of all Meru leaders to assist him in safeguarding the well-being of the Meru people at this critical time of the COVID 19
At the same time, the legislator called upon the agriculture Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya to wake up and stand for his Meru people who are at crossroads as a result of diminishing Miraa business in various parts of the country.
Kawira observed that the agriculture docket squarely falls under Munya and added that his voice on the issue will have some positive impact.
As political leaders went ahead with varied opinions on the issue of miraa, a Presidential address that listed Miraa as one of the essential agricultural products raised the hopes of miraa farmers and traders. Meru leaders were seen to struggle with who takes credit on the issue.
All upper Eastern counties have banned Miraa trade as a measure to prevent the spread of the deadly Corona Virus.
