The name Isaac “Kupe” Munene is as popular as ever in Meru County and its environs. He started as a football player at Kaaga Boys Secondary School during his youthful days.
A gifted midfielder he was and a dead-ball specialist during his playing days. He played for Homeboys FC of Meru and represented Eastern Province in many youth competitions. Currently, he is working as a Sports Officer in Meru County, a job he enjoys wholeheartedly.
He has represented Meru County in the Kenya Youth Inter-County Association competitions since they were inaugurated in 2015. Meru County has always performed satisfactorily in the tourney which includes football and volleyball competitions.
Today’s story is not about Isaac “Kupe” Munene playing for Kaaga Boys Secondary School. It is neither his story as a former Homeboys player nor is it the story of him being the Sports Officer in Meru County.
This is the story of how Isaac “Kupe” Munene has traversed the continent and beyond through the game of football. And how has this happened? Isaac Munene the football lover works in the National football team Harambee Stars in the Conditioning, Strength, and kit Management Department.
In 2020 he traveled with the Harambee Stars under-23 team to Uzbekistan for a friendly match.
The ever-humorous sportsman also traveled to South Sudan, Mauritius, and Ethiopia for the CHAN qualifiers. As if that was not enough the son of Meru County traveled with Harambee Stars to Morocco, Uganda, and Togo for the World Cup qualifier matches. When Kenya beat Zanzibar on home soil in the CECAFA Championship in Machakos Stadium in 2017, Isaac Munene was part of the victorious team.
Back at home in Meru, he gives back to the community by supporting Bidii Sports Academy. Here in Meru, he is christened “The Football Governor.”
