Former Marsabit governor Ukur Yattan is back with a bang. He has formed a movement whose vision is to liberate the people of Marsabit County and the entire northern frontier region in Kenya according to him.
Speaking recently when he launched the Upya Movement Yattan told residents of the county that the time has come for the people of Marsabit to participate and get involved in sharing the national cake. He says the region has lagged behind for decades a situation that should never be allowed by the current and the future leadership at the county and the national levels.
The treasury Cabinet Secretary observed that the current leadership at the county level is asleep and has failed the residents in matters that touch on development a situation that has left them suffering under Governor Mohamed Ali government.
Accompanied by various leaders at the county and national levels, Yattan toured various parts of the county to popularize the Upya movement that is seen to also drum up support for President Uhuru Kenyatta’s economic and political policies that are aimed at uplifting the lives of the people of not only Marsabit county but also other parts of the northeastern region.
He said the focus is to offer equal opportunities to all communities living in all parts of the county for fair distribution of resources and peaceful co-existence.
‘The mission of Upya movement is to ensure Marsabit and other parts of arid and semi-arid parts of the country have a good share of the national cake, it is our time to sit at the table where important national matters are being discussed to table the problems and challenges facing our people today. We want to be part of the agenda of this country because our region has been an appendage for political agenda and this should not be allowed to happen again’ Yattan said.
Among those who accompanied CS Yattan was director of public prosecutions Nordin Haji who applauded President Uhuru Kenyatta for minding the welfare of the people living in the northern part of the country by appointing Ukur Yattan as the CS in-charge of national treasury. He said this is historical and the people of Marsabit should appreciate the gesture by supporting Uhuru political and development agenda.
Haji however raccused Marsabit governor Mohamed Ali and his Madera counterpart Ali Roba for what he termed has labelling CS Yattan as Uhuru’s errands boy. He said that is uncalled for and should not be taken seriously by any good thinking person in any part of this country.
‘I would like to ask you, people of Marsabit, is a Cabinet Secretary in charge of Finance an errands boy? We will not accept such utterances. We have never had a Minister of Finance from our region since independence, having our son running the docket should be a source of joy to all of us and not an opportunity to demean the position for political reasons; Haji said.
The political environment in Marsabit County continues to take various dimensions as the election date comes close. Former governor Ukur Yattan is eyeing to recapture the seat of governor while the incumbent governor Mohamud Ali is doing anything possible to defend the lucrative position.
