Embu: Bhang, Miraa blamed for increase in crime and school drop outs

Embu County Gender, Children and Social Services Executive Joan Mwende has blamed bhang and miraa consumption for the rise in school drop outs and social evils.

According to Mwende, there has been an increase in the use of drugs that has negatively affected Primary and Secondary school children.

Mwende noted that the County Government was keen on reversing the trend and already they had founded a rehabilitation center in Siakago, Mbeere North.

She urged parents and teachers to be on the lookout and called upon the relevant agencies to enhance the fight against drug abuse to protect the young generation.

“The unfortunate thing is that many of the parents are still ‘sleeping’ and assuming their children are upright. Many parents don’t even bother when invited by schools over their children’s behaviour,” Mwende said.

Joan added that there was need for all parties to act on the legislations on drug and substance abuse before the situation escalates.

“Even though we have pieces of legislation regarding drug and drug abuse, we’ve felt that we need to do more than just have laws by going beyond the paperwork to actions,” Mwende added.
