Isiolo residents and traders want speedy completion of the market being constructed by the County Government in the town along Isiolo-Moyale Highway arguing that they were currently operating in a wanting environment.
Speaking to The Mashariki News, the traders asked the county governor Dr. Mohamed Abdi Kuti to authorize the contractor to speed up the project to rid them from operating in the scorching sun that is also damaging their commodities.
The traders said it was even worse during the rainy season as their perishable goods get damaged as have no place to keep them.
Mary Muthoni, a tomato seller said there was a time when a lorry driver lost control and killed eight people near the place she operates from.
“When the day ends without any motor accident here, we thank God,” Muthoni said. “If the County government has mercy on us let them speed up the completion of our market.” She added.
David Mwenda, a cabbage seller in Isiolo town, asked the county government to ensure that after completion of the market, those who were affected when the market was burnt down are given the first priority in the allocation of space in the new market.
“Am afraid that the tribalism that is common is Isiolo may affect some people who lost their property to cruel inferno last year,” Mwenda said.
“I know Kuti is a good person who does not discriminate his people and he will ensure that justice is done when the time for occupying the market come.” He concluded.
Halima Yufu, a mitumba seller in the town, asked the government to ensure that they also solve the problem of poor drainage as they work on the market.
Kenya National Highway Authority has on numerous occasions asked the traders to move away from the road to avoid accident risks.
Through the Isiolo deputy governor Dr Issa Abdi, the Authority told them to move away because their lives were important.
The traders have occupied the areas from Fish Pod area Opposite Isiolo Boys, all the way to Isiolo town mosque.
