It is now a reprieve to hunger-stricken residents especially in Igembe, Buuri, and Tigania regions after Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza’s relief food interventions. The Governor intervened on behalf of residents to President William Ruto and His Deputy Rigathi Gachagua.
“I joined other Governors from counties affected by drought to discuss immediate intervention and measures to save lives. Deputy President Gachagua Chaired the meeting at the Office of the Deputy President, Harambee House Annex. I thereafter joined President William Ruto at statehouse where President flagged off a consignment of relief food to various parts of the country including Meru,” she said.
Kawira, through her Deputy, Rev Mutuma M’Ethingia recently presided over relief food and assorted donations distribution. The relief food was distributed as a caution measure from the ravaging effects of drought to Malaene, Mpitha village at the border of Athiru Ruujine and Aantubetwe Kiongo ward and Ndoleli regions.
This is the village where 119 patients from 68 families were admitted to Maua district hospital after consuming meat from a sick camel.
On the fateful night governor, Kawira Mwangaza ordered all four Ambulances in the region i.e Kangeta, Mutuati, Nyambene to assist in the transportation of the victims to Nyambene level 4 hospital which saved the lives of the 119 patients who got admitted without no fatalities due to faster and timely response by her officers.
Kawira also honored Members of staff at Nyambene level Four Hospital who had first contact with the Malaene victims of hunger, (who fed on a Camel carcass) treated, fed, and moved back to their families.
The staff in consultation with other friends and partners roped in many other medics from Mutuati, Sub-county Hospital, and the Hindu community and made a steering committee that has been doing fundraising and receiving donations from the community for the purpose of feeding the Malaene Families.
The county government of Meru has been leading in food security intervention in various parts of the county to save thousands of residents currently facing starvation as a result of drought.
