Boys have outshone girls by attaining thrice the number of Grade As in the 2022 KCSE but failed terribly by scoring the highest Grade Es.

Out of last year’s 884,263 candidates who sat for their Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education examination, 875 male students attained a mean grade of A plain while only 271 girls achieved a mean grade of A.

Interestingly, while announcing this year’s KCSE, Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu said 18, 062 boys scored Grade Es compared to girls 12,760 similar grades.

Machogu however congratulated the 2022 class saying Grade Es had dropped to 30,822 students compared to 46,151 in the year 2021.

NGOs, civic organizations, and other education stakeholders have been putting more effort into fighting for the girl child ignoring the plight of the boy child.

“Number of candidates with a mean of E declined to 3.49% from 5.56% in the previous year, Machugu said.

The CS noted that out of the 881,416 candidates who sat the 2022 KCSE exam, 173,345 scored the minimum university entry grade of C+ and above compared to 145,776 in 2021.

Machogu said there were no irregularities due to exam mechanisms put in place to curb them.

“We did come up with a mechanism that accountability was transferred to the personal level,” Machogu said.

The number of candidates who scored D+ and above is 522, 588 (59.14%) compared to 53.29% in 2021.
