Drama as relatives exchange blows over kin’s body

Drama as relatives exchange blows over kin’s body
August 22, 2018 Eastern Newspaper

There was drama at the Nanyuki Teaching and Referral Hospital when members of two families engaged in a fist fight over the burial of their kin.

The two families from Buuri, Meru County had gone to pick the body of their kinsman Jamleck Kimanthi when the incident happened.

It is alleged that the widow had picked the burial permit and her family proceeded with the body but they were accosted by the deceased’s family who demanded for the permit.

Things turned sour after it emerged that the widow’s aunt had allegedly disappeared with the document.

The angered family members turned their wrath on the widow’s aunt Eunice Nkirote, who had hid the document at a nearby chemist as they demanded to be allowed to bury Kimanthi at their home.

According to the deceased brother Joseph Mwangi, the body was to be buried at Maritati village in Buuri, but the other family wanted to bury it at Ngushishi village, raising concern as to why Kimanthi would be buried at his in-laws’.

It took the intervention of the police to calm the situation and the body taken back to the morgueas members of the two families were arrested and taken to Nanyuki police station.

Laikipia East police boss Mutoro Kizito said that body would not be laid to rest until both families came into an agreement.
