Isiolo residents to benefit from Sh.20 million dams

Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri has said that the Government is set to build two dams in Isiolo County aimed at bringing more land under irrigation.

Speaking when he rolled out the National Peste des Petits Ruminant Control and Eradication Strategy (PPR) in Isiolo County, accompanied by Governors Mohammed Kuti (Isiolo) and Ndiritu Muriithi (Laikipia), CS Kiunjuri said the dams to be located at Kambi ya Juu and Badana and are part of the government’s initiative to deal with the recurring food shortage in the region through irrigation.

“The sh.20 milllion dams will act as a source of water for irrigation and domestic use, the government has further set aside Sh30million, for fodder production in Isiolo, Laikipia and Samburu counties.” Cs Kiunjuri said.

The CS called on farmers to ensure that their animals are vaccinated from PPR adding that the government government is willing to compensate those who lose their animals to diseases.

Peste des petits ruminants (PPR), also known as ‘goat plague’, is a viral disease of goats and sheep characterized by fever, sores in the mouth, diarrhea, pneumonia, and sometimes death.

The National control and Eradication Strategy aims at eradicating PPR from Kenya by 2027 through achieving a progressive reduction of the incidence and spread of the disease while reinforcing veterinary services.
