August 2, 2018 Eastern Newspaper

Conservancy rangers in Marsabit County have been lauded for their efforts in fighting poaching and enhancing security in the region during in an occasion organized to mark this year’s World Rangers’ Day,

The rangers have overseen the drop in Elephant poaching cases from 108 in 2012 to 9 in 2017.

The event organized by the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and the Northern Rangelands Trust (NRT) brought together rangers drawn from 31 community conservancies based in Wajir, West Pokot, Narok Isiolo, Samburu, Baringo, Laikipia and Marsabit.

NRT Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Tom Lalampaa, lauded the conservation efforts and attributed the success to partnership with various government agencies and other stake holders.

KWS Northern Regional Conservancy Coordinator, Captain Robert Obrien expressed satisfaction that communities in the region have accepted to take part in wildlife preservation which he said would help in the conservation of the environment in a bigger way.

“We have held this celebration to show case and support the vital work that ranger’s do in the fight to protect our natural resources and wildlife. It also serves as an opportunity to honour fallen rangers who have lost their lives trying to protect this precious heritage,” he said.

The rangers carried out community service to the residents of Marsabit town by conducting a cleaning exercise in the town in which over two truckloads of garbage was collected.
