Detectives seize 500Kgs of Narcotic ‘Dry Khat’ at JKIA

Detectives seize 500Kgs of Narcotic ‘Dry Khat’ at JKIA
April 9, 2019 Eastern Newspaper

500Kgs of Narcotic ‘Dry Khat’-packed in 52 bags-concealed as Tea Packets was last evening intercepted by officers from the Directorate of criminal investigations (DCI) at the Jomo Kenyatta International  Airport (JKIA).

The sleuths acting on tipoff from the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) impounded the consignment during screening at the JKIA for the cargo destined for USA, Austaralia and Austria.

In a statement the DCI said “500Kgs of Narcotic ‘Dry Khat’-packed in 52 bags-concealed as Tea Packets, sent by various Exporters and destined to United States, Australia & Austria was intercepted yesterday by DCI Detectives during screening at JKIA.  KRA had issued a Seizure Notice on the goods.”

Khat is illegal in the US and became a banned class C drug in Britain in 2014. It contains cathinone, which is a Schedule I controlled substance in New York, and cathine, a schedule IV controlled substance.

The popular stimulant mainly grown in Eastern Kenya has been viewed for years as a socio-cultural commodity promoting interaction with an estimated 500,000 families depending on it for their livelihoods.
