Irene Makena, keeps people, property safe
December 16, 2018 Eastern Newspaper

Makena’s job is to safeguard people and their properties in 40 Kenyan counties and it is a job she does with satisfaction and enthusiasm.

Makena, 35, does all this from the Pelt Security’s offices in Meru County.

Out of five more noticeable offices of major establishments in Meru you are more likely to find it is the Pelt Security who ensures safe passage and exits.

Pelt Security has grown into one of the most recognized brands in the security services industry in Meru but her achievements have ensured she is sought after in many counties.

Makena runs a training centre for her guards at Ngonyi where her workers undergo training to         understand various security scenarios including terrorism, and how to handle all kinds of people at                     facilities under her protection.

“At the training school I equip the recruits before deploying them to their stations. They undergo                                          physicals and trained on how to handle security equipment. But first there is a rigorous vetting to                        ensure we get the most disciplined work force,” said Makena.

She said “The idea is to have guards who are alert at their stations all the time the guards are equipped with skills to relate with students, employees and effectively deal with all manner of situations in their work, she stated.

Coming from a family whose four members have served in the military (her father was in the General Service Unit), Makena said she was drawn to the job by a passion developed in her days in the NYS where she went through some of the toughest training regimes which instilled discipline, respect for others and passion to serve.

“Ensuring that people and property are safe is not a walk in the park. You have to be highly skilled and up to the task of sticking to your duty,” she said.

“My sisters and brothers too are in armed forces and we were brought up at the GSU headquarters.  I went through the National Youth Service and later did hotel management which I practiced for two years. I did other undertakings like operating small eating outlets and farming but all the time knew I was destined for security services industry, because of the passion nurtured in the family and NYS,” she said.
