Isiolo County partners CREAW to address gender based violence

The County Government of Isiolo has signed a three (3) year deal with Centre for Rights Education and Awareness (CREAW) in a move aimed at curbing gender based violence and retrogressive practices such as female genital mutilation (FGM) in the County.

Speaking while presiding over the launch, Isiolo Governor Mohammed Kuti said his administration was keen on supporting and empowering women.

Governor Kuti noted that the partnership will help create awareness, empower women and end GBV cases that are rampant in the region among them rape, defilement, physical harassment, emotional torture, Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), forced marriages and early pregnancies.

Isiolo County Woman Representative Rehema Jaldesa on her part bemoaned the widespread cases of gender based violence and vowed to ensure that all those found culpable are brought to book.

The MP added that increased cases of rape and defilement among school going children and women in the region was cause for alarm and called for tough measures to be meted against perpetrators. According to Jaldesa, sexual violence perpetrators should have their male organs chopped off instead of being jailed for 10 years.

“Gender-based violence undermines the health and security of the victims and I strongly condemn all those engaging on the same. I will ensure action is taken against all those who perpetrate gender against women and girls.” The lawmaker said.
