Marsabit: Sh. 21 million water project to quench residents thirst

Marsabit: Sh. 21 million water project to quench residents thirst
February 7, 2019 Eastern Newspaper

Residents of Marsabit County can breathe a sigh of relief following the unveiling of a sh. 21 million water project following the construction of dams at El-Qarsa and Kituruni at Marsabit National Park.

The project funded by the French development Agency, is aimed at reducing human wildlife conflict as the locals will now have access to clean water for domestic use and for their livestock.

The project launched by Kenya Wildlife service at Marsabit National park will offer a lasting solution to the perennial water problem.

Speaking during the launch, KWS Board Chairman John Waithaka said the dams will be used for both domestic and livestock use.

Waithaka noted that harvesting and storing water through damming was a viable option for addressing water scarcity in Marsabit town and urged local residents to embrace the option.

He added that KWS will ensure the aquifers are recharged for the benefit of community wells and boreholes located downstream.

Waithaka added that the dams will help ease pressure in the forest as the water will be pumped out, reducing the cases of human wildlife conflict in the area.

Kituruni dam has a water capacity of 5.1 Million Litres while El-Qarsa has 20 Million Litres and will be serving a population of 11,000 households.
